What TMS treats

Clearance, protocol and insurance pathways differ by diagnosis. Each guide below sets out where TMS stands for that condition in Wisconsin — what the FDA has cleared, how long a course runs, and what insurers ask for before they approve it.

Treatment-Resistant Depression

TMS is an FDA-cleared treatment option for major depressive disorder when previous treatment has not helped enough. In Wisconsin, planning weekday visits and checking insurance requirements are important first steps, particularly if you need to travel to a clinic.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Deep TMS is an FDA-cleared treatment option for obsessive-compulsive disorder, but not every Wisconsin TMS clinic has the equipment to provide it. Cleared, off-label, and why the difference matters

The FDA has cleared TMS for major depressive disorder, depression with anxiety, OCD and smoking cessation, plus adolescent depression as an add-on treatment. Clinics may also offer it off-label for PTSD and other conditions. Off-label does not mean unsafe — it means the evidence has not gone through clearance, and insurers usually will not pay for it on its own.

If a clinic promises TMS will treat something outside those areas without explaining that it is off-label and self-pay, treat it as a warning sign.

Ask any clinic these four questions

  1. 1. Is TMS FDA-cleared for my specific diagnosis, or off-label?
  2. 2. Will you run the insurance authorisation, and what do you need from me?
  3. 3. Who supervises the sessions, and is a prescriber on site?
  4. 4. What happens if I do not respond by session twenty?
